VELANKANNI

Velankanni is a town on the south east coast of India, in Tamil Nadu State. It is famous for the Basilica dedicated to Mother Mary. Vailankanni is also known as the 'Lourdes of the East' because millions of pilgrims visit the Shrine throughout the year.

Reaching Velankanni - The nearest big city is Thanjavur. From there it is about 4 hours journey by road to reach Velankanni. On the way you will reach Nagapattinam town from where it is about 30 mins journey.

POONDI

Poondi is a small village in the Thiruvaiyaru taluk of Thanjavur district of the state of Tamilnadu in South India. The nearest town about 3kms away, is Thirukattupalli. There is a Basilica here dedicated to Mother Mary referred to as Poondimatha in the area.

As far as accomodation is concerned there are no hotels. The church has built guest rooms which is given to pilgrims for stay. I prefer to stay in Thanjavur. Hotel Gnanam at Thanjavur is a good option. For details visit their website Hotel Gnanam

Reaching Poondi - The nearest big city is Thanjavur. From there it is about 90 minutes journey by road to reach Poondi.

SANTHOME CATHEDRAL, CHENNAI

In the whole world, there are only three churches built over the tomb of an Apostle of Jesus Christ - the Basilica of Saint Peter built over the tomb of St.Peter in Rome, Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela built over the tomb of St.James in Spain and Basilica of the National Shrine of St.Thomas built over the tomb of St.Thomas, in Chennai, India.

Reaching Santhome Cathedral - one can take an auto or car - the place is well known - at the end of Marina beach - the second longest beach in the world.
